Antique Hindu Bronze Statue
Shiva Embracing Parvati
Alinganamurti Divine Lovers
Origin: India, Circa: Early-mid 1900S'
H 11.5 in. (29cm), W 5.25 in. (13cm), D 4.5 in. (11.5cm)
Condition: minor imperfections, overall very good!

Stand gracefully on an oval lotus pedestal over a three-tier rectangular base, the endearing intimacy of this divine loving couple is shown in explicit body gestures, and their stylized figures are elegantly modeled in fluid “s” shapes in tribhanga pose; as the four-armed Shiva leaning slightly forward toward his beloved Parvati, his lower left hand curled around his consort, and right hand raised in abhaya mudra (granting assurance), and in his upper right and left hands, he bears a Parashu (ax) and a Mriga (deer), while Parvati is seen smiling with a conch in her left hand and right hand resting on her thigh. Such an image of Shiva and Parvati in a warm embrace is identified as Alinganamurti. The dynamic composition and the rhythmic sense of movement flowing tenderly between the two gods are distinctively Chola in style. The age of this statue is attributed to 1950s or earlier. It is in very good condition.
